With Examples

As a mother of 2 special needs children I got so sick and tired of telling people the same thing all the time when we added folks to our team or signed up for camp or went to a new school. After awhile it just got old!

So after doing this a million times it struck me that why don’t I create my child’s history and story. WOW why did I not think about this before? I use both when going to doctors and I use the story for people that are new in their lives like a new sitter, a bus driver, new teacher etc. I just took the teachers annual document of questions about my child and gave them mine. Brilliant 2 documents with multi purposes!

You can see a copy of a history document here. It is an easy to read table literally giving his history and since I have scanned all his documents (see this article) I could put in the end of his history “feel free to ask me for copies of any of the paperwork”. I am so proud of myself!

I did not provide an example of a story but it really is a few paragraphs of what you want people to know about your child. It should include things like:

• What they like
• What they do not like
• What are their triggers
• Who to contact if there is a problem
• What to do if they are triggered
• Background/education on your child’s specific needs
